The two-page CV has become the Microsoft Windows of jobhunting. It’s not about it being the best format, it’s just the one that everybody uses. So, just how important is size?
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, who you’d think ought to know whether or not size matters, offers the following guidance on their website: ‘Ideally it should be two pages long with each page printed on a separate sheet.’
Employment agency Manpower gives similar advice, suggesting that: ‘Two pages is an ideal length for a CV.’
Outplacement experts RightCoutts take a slightly more relaxed view, advising us to:
‘Consider a one-page résumé-style CV or a two- or three-page CV.’
Jobsite, the self-proclaimed ‘original, award-winning UK job search and jobs by email service’, goes into a bit more detail for visitors to its site: ‘The ideal length is two to three pages and one page for the covering letter. If you have just left college you will have less to say but don’t pad your CV out with waffle. One page of useful information is undoubtedly worth far more than two pages of irrelevant facts.’
Another employment agency is more succinct and dogmatic: ‘Your CV should be no longer than two sides in length.’
From visiting the above websites and a number of others, there seems to be a broad consensus that a two-page CV is probably the safest and most widely accepted length to go for. Life is rarely straightforward and unambiguous, however. Unicom Systems, a long-established IT technical consultancy company, throws that cosy consensus into disarray by dispensing the following advice: ‘Often CV guides nominate two pages as the magic length for a CV. Unless you have very little experience, that may be a little light on detail for IT industry requirements. For our purposes, ideal CV length would be three to five (and not more than six) pages, depending on your experience.’
So, IT specialists seem to have a dispensation to go beyond the usual two pages. In fact, this also applies to a wide range of technical roles, including the more bighitting engineering jobs, where the need for substance and detail outweighs the appeal of brevity. Executives that are more senior also get a bit more leeway, judging from the advice proffered on various senior management recruitment sites. However, unless you fall into one of these categories, the odds are heavily in favour of the two-page CV…in principle anyway!
OK, that’s enough of this shilly-shallying about the number of pages in the perfect CV. The fact is, you can both bore a recruiter rigid in two pages and keep their interest over three pages, depending on the quality of your content. Here are five unambiguous tips that will improve the quality and impact of your CV:
1. Only include details that positively sell you. Your CV is a marketing document, not a confession.
2. When it comes to describing your knowledge and experience, don’t put in information simply because you feel it ought to go in. Keep asking yourself the question, ‘Does this fact make it more likely that I’ll be called for interview?’ If it does, then in it goes.
3. Remember that you want your CV to be read and responded to. Include just enough information to stimulate interest, but not so much that you bore the reader.
4. Make sure the content is relevant to the job you’re looking for now, not the one you’re looking to leave.
5. Be brief. Go for short sentences. Steer clear of flowery, descriptive language. A CV is more text message than novel!
